Taneyan Lanjang Shared Home Gardens and Sustainable Rural Livelihoods of Ethnic Madurese in Madura Island, Indonesia

The ethnic Madurese are among the top five most populous groups in Indonesia. Their traditional settlements have a special design called Taneyan Lanjang (TL). TL consist of several elements, which arranged specific pattern that is affected by local and Islamic culture. gardening space settlement—here referred to as shared home garden (SHG)—is family households. apply knowledge manage their gardens. This study investigated features TLs SHGs, mostly relation cultural matters, utilization plants, management based on knowledge, contribution rural livelihoods. area consisted four regencies Madura Island, A total 200 were observed, 4 key informants 400 respondents who engaged questioned through in-depth interviews. plant species cultivated SHGs recorded identified according database Plant List. In total, 108 within 40 families recorded. Fabaceae had highest number species, with 10 (9.26%), used food (65.7%). We characterized important services functions provided livelihoods directly benefit communities.
